Ever wanted to know more about the Moonies? This Friday is your chance:

Friday, March 18th, 5pm, room G50 (main building)
Dr. LUCAS POKORNY (Aberdeen University)
“Millenarianism and the Pursuit of World Peace”

Abstract:
The lecture will focus on the millenarian dimension of the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (aka Unification Church 統一敎). From a notion that was at the beginning solely used in Christian theology in reference to a Godly Kingdom on Earth, the term “millenarianism” (or “chiliasm” deriving from the Greek word “χίλιοι”) changed into a concept comprising all beliefs of an imminent new world order or a “golden age” based on highest moral virtues and the utmost spiritual or dianoetic cultivation. The paper will highlight the crucial role millenarian beliefs play as a driving force behind “the pursuit of world peace”, delineating the doctrinal foundation for the FFWPU’s political and social agenda.

I will tersely discuss the major tenets of the FFWPU in the light of its millenarian objective to establish God’s Kingdom on Earth, i.e. to restore cosmic harmony. The research topic is part of a larger project which is exploring and comparing millenarian beliefs in East Asian new religions.
