Almost exactly two years ago – on 23 July 2012 – Shin Meekyoung’s equestrian statue of the Duke of Cumberland was hoisted into position in Cavendish Square.
I happened to be in the area on 24 July 2014 so I paid a visit. The soap from which the statue is made has shown itself to be remarkably resilient. Contrary to what one might expect, the actual detail of the sculpture has remained surprisingly intact. Instead, the soap has dried out, causing big cracks to form. The Duke’s left leg had dropped off within a year. And now his right forearm has gone too.
