Conference on Asian Cultural Flows

The popularity of J-Pop and K-Pop in East and Southeast Asia (and beyond) is now well-known, but less is known about what has facilitated such cultural flows and their implications for social identity and culture of the nation. This conference is part of our efforts to investigate economic, political and cultural conditions that have led to transnational flows of culture in Asia as well as consequences of and responses to an increasingly inter-connected Asian regional culture. The expected outcome of our collaborative research is an edited book to be published by Springer in 2017. Papers presented in this conference will provide grounded analysis into the organizational and economic logics of Asian creative industries, policies of the nations that promote or hinder cultural flows and the media convergence and online consumers’ surging demand for Asianized cultural products. In addition to the core authors for the volume, we invite speakers with expertise on the theme to facilitate discussion. Afternoon is dedicated to a special session on the Korean pop culture.
The conference is not open to the public but research students from Birkbeck College and King’s College of London are welcome to attend. Those who are from other universities can enquire.
