The Korean Cultural Centre UK is proud to announce a new Korean cultural course this autumn. Artist-researcher Dr Young Maeng will introduce traditional Korean ink painting and demonstrate a variety of painting techniques for beginners. Korean ink painting has a rich tradition, which flourished throughout the golden age of Korean Art during the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1897), and incorporates traditional Neo-Confucian ideology. This beautiful style of painting is still widely practiced in the contemporary art world. It is possible to learn both basic and advanced brush techniques based on the ‘Four Gentlemen’ (Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Bamboo, and Plum Blossom) which represent each season, symbolising virtue and inner beauty. For this course, we are going to learn beginner techniques through orchid painting.

No previous painting experience is required to take this class and all painting materials will be provided. We will focus on basic Korean ink painting techniques, covering orchids as well as other subjects such as fish. Students will receive individual and targeted advice on their own work, and there will be time to discuss and reflect on the painting experience at the end of the class.
