Embroidery class

The Korean Cultural Centre UK is proud to announce a new Korean cultural course this autumn. The Application Deadline is 30 Oct 2019 17:00.

Jasu (hand embroidery) dates back to the prehistoric era when humans first started to make clothes. Traditional Korean embroidery has developed along with changes in culture and arts over time. As such, Jasu expresses perfectly the aesthetic qualities of Korean culture.

Traditional Korean embroidery is most commonly used for decoration of clothes and crafts. It is often seen as a piece of artwork in itself. In various kinds of temples, Jasu has been used to decorate Buddhist statues or other important features.

Historically, it is not only the designs but also the colours of Korean hand embroidery which represent special meanings. Korean embroidery typically makes use of the five cardinal colours, based on the ancient philosophical theory of yin and yang and the five elements. These five colours (red, yellow, blue, white and black) each embody a different symbolic and philosophical significance. In addition, hand embroidery thread and fabric were traditionally all dyed by hand which made each of the colours brighter and more vivid. Korean embroidery is characterized by its unique omission of non-essential details. For example, the simple technique of thread twisting was often used to create natural shading.

No previous related experience is required to take this class and we will prepare all materials for your use. We will focus on the basic sewing techniques and concepts used in Korean hand embroidery. By the end of the session, you will have your own handkerchief decorated with hand embroidery to take home.
