Emma Gladstone, Artistic Director and Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella, will lead an engaging conversation with a guest panel of female, Korean choreographers; Jin Yeob Cha, Bora Kim and Sung Im Her, to discuss the subject of gender politics in Korean contemporary dance.

This pre-show seminar offers you the chance to delve deeper into the Korean contemporary dance scene and the issues that have been, and are, affecting it today.

About the speakers

  • Emma Gladstone is the Artistic Director & Chief Executive of Dance Umbrella, London’s international dance festival. Previously Emma was Artistic Programmer at Sadler’s Wells 2005-13, and has worked extensively with the British Council, Southbank Centre, The Place and the Rolex Mentor Protégé programme. Before programming Emma danced with Arlene Phillips, Lea Anderson’s The Cholmondeleys, and co-founded Adventures in Motion Pictures with Sir Matthew Bourne. Emma regularly works as a mentor and advisor, most recently in South Korea, China and Chile. Recent awards include an Honorary Fellowship from Trinity Laban and a 2019 Tonic Award, received with DU’s two previous Artistic Directors, recognising outstanding women in the arts.
  • Jin Yeob Cha is the founder and artistic director of Seoul-based dance company Collective A. Having been the director of choreography for the opening and closing ceremony of 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games, she has worked with numerous companies and choreographers internationally including LDP Company of Korea, Hofesh Shechter Company (UK), Galili Dance company (Netherlands), and the English National Opera (UK). Cha is known for creating multi-disciplinary works which cover issues such as gender, power and femininity. She has received Today’s Young Artist Award from the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, as well as an award for choreography of Korea Musical Awards, and Dance Critic’s Award.

  • Bora Kim has emerged in recent years as Korea’s most spotlighted contemporary dance choreographer. Kim is the founder of dance company Art Project BORA. The Company has seen significant growth with their performances both at home and abroad such as Japan, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Slovenia, Germany, Austria, Mexico, Italy, Brazil and Uruguay.
    Art Project BORA’s Muak is part of A Festival of Korean Dance (Tue 2 Jun).
  • Sung Im Her is an award-winning choreographer who has worked with many artists/companies including Jan Fabre/Troubleyn, Les ballets C de la B and Needcompany. In 2019 Sung Im Her was choreographic director for Opera de Lille’s production Troi Contes. Also in 2019 she presented her show NUTCRUSHER at The Place, which was inspired by the slow but dramatic arrival of the #metoo movement in Korea.
