Recent international media headlines on the success of South Korean popular culture clearly demonstrate its global circulation and impact. For example, BTS has been topping the global music charts, and very recently BLACKPINK has made to the UK Chart no 1. Bong Joon-ho’s multi award winning film Parasite put South Korean films on the top of the international film circuit, artistically and commercially. The Oxford English Dictionary recently included 26 Korean words associated with Korean contemporary culture, and the K-dramas from Squid Game to Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix are a global success, while K-pop on YouTube and Spotify accumulates millions of viewings. In the context of this international prominence of the South Korean creative industries, the seminar ‘The Korean Wave (Hallyu) and Globalizing South Korean Creativity’ explores the multifaceted global process of the mainstreamization, institutionalization and canonization of contemporary Korean culture and creativity.
