Out of the Ordinary poster

Since the global financial crisis of 2008, the conditions of architectural practice in South Korea have fundamentally changed. With four decades of high growth — in which construction took up more than 20% of the nation’s GDP — coming to a sudden end, the architectural profession has been thrown into crisis. This new environment has also been a seedbed of architectural creativity, particularly for young architects seeking to establish their foothold in a competitive market. In a society where the ordinary is in continuous transition, new kinds of clients, projects, and programs have emerged from a social spectrum that departs from traditional public and private sectors. Often constrained by extreme budget and site conditions, they ask architects to perform new social and disciplinary roles. Young innovative architects have responded with a combination of resourcefulness, intelligence, and toughness in their interventions into the site and program and into materials and fabrication. Their work involves cooperation with local mom-and-pop shops as well as major corporations seeking sophisticated output for an international market. Out of the Ordinary highlights the extraordinary material and social landscape that is contemporary Korea and the strategies and methodologies of young architects whose work evolves from and goes beyond the ordinary.

Presenting the work of nine architects, two photographers, and a team of designers, Out of the Ordinary is a critical presentation of the contemporary conditions of Korean architecture. The architects have been selected from past awardees of Korea’s Young Architect Awards, a prestigious prize hosted by Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and co-organized by the Korea Architects Institute and Korean Institute of Female Architects. Inaugurated in 2008, the Young Architect Awards has supported emerging Korean architects through publications and exhibitions.
