To my knowledge this is the first London-based event in the UK/Korea Creative Futures programme 2017-18.

A dynamic new collaborative project featuring new works of collaboration from some of the UK and South Korea’s most exciting poets and literature performers. With a program visiting both nations, Beyond Words will explore the 21st century international avant garde which has seen poetic pracitioners engage in performance and collaboration in a way never seen before. Introducing South Korean writers Yuwon Hwang, Minjung Kim and Kiwan Sung to a British audience this headline event at Rich Mix London will feature new live artworks made for the night, as well as new collaborations from locally based poets.

Kim Min Jeong (b.1976, poet, writer, editor) was born in Incheon, South Korea. Debuted in 1999 as a poet, her book of poetry First Time, That Woman Feeling won the 17th annual Contemporary Poetry Prize. Apart from her activities as a poet and columnist, she teaches poetry and works as a chief editor at the publishing house ‘Munhakdongne’. Her newest book, Beautiful and Useless, came out in 2016.

Hwang Yu Won was born in Ulsan in 1982. He received a B.A in Religious Studies and Philosophy from Sogang University and is currently getting his Ph.D in Indian Philosophy at Dongguk University. His book of poetry Everything in the World, Maximized won the Kim Soo-young prize.

Sung Kiwan is a poet, musician and sound artist from Seoul, South Korea. The winner of Kim Hyun Literature Prize in 2015 and Baum Artist Awards in 2013, he has released 4 collections of poetry including ‘Story of Yuri'(2003), and ‘You have been Shopping?'(1998) since his debut as a poet in 1994. He has worked as a musical director and producer at several festivals, films and theatre. He teaches Inter-media Art at Kaywon University of Art and Design.

Hannah Silva is a poet, playwright and performer known for her innovative explorations of form, voice and language in performance. Her work explores a wide range of subjects: from political rhetoric (Opposition) to paranormal science (Total Man), teenage sexual identity (Orchid) to long distance running (Marathon Tales). Her current performance, Schlock!, is a meditation on pain, the body and the self, consent, complicity and ownership, splicing the language of Fifty Shades of Grey with a novel by Kathy Acker. Her debut poetry collection Forms of Protest (Penned in the Margins, 2013) has been widely praised and was Highly Commended in the Forward Prizes. She won the Tinniswood Award for Best Radio Drama Script with her verse play Marathon Tales (co-written with Colin Teevan for BBC Radio 3) and has been shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award for New Work in Poetry for Total Man.

Luke Kennard is the author of five collections of poetry and one novel. His fifth collection of poems, Cain, has been shortlisted for the International Dylan Thomas Prize 2017 and his first novel, The Transition, is on the longlist for the Desmond Elliott Award. He lectures in the English department at the University of Birmingham.

SJ Fowler is a poet and artist. He works in the modernist and avant-garde traditions, across poetry, fiction, theatre, sonic art, visual art, installation and performance. He has published various collections of poetry and text, and been commissioned by Tate Modern, BBC Radio 3, The British Council, Tate Britain, Liverpool Biennial and Wellcome Collection. He has been translated into 21 languages and performed at venues across the world, from Mexico City to Erbil, Beijing to Tbilisi. He is the poetry editor of 3am magazine, Lecturer at Kingston University, teaches at Tate Modern and is the curator of the Enemies project.
