The last Korean cinema conference organised by Sheffield Hallam University I went to was thoroughly rewarding, and although I’d rather this month’s conference were physical so that I could escape from London for a couple of days, I’ve already registered for it.

South Korean Women’s Cinema conference will take place online, from Thursday 23rd September to Saturday 25th September 2021
While the profile and popularity of Korean cinema abroad has peaked with the success of Parasite at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020, women’s cinema and women filmmakers’ wide-ranging contribution to Korean cinema have been consistently overlooked by film audiences and academics alike. As the first major English-language conference focused solely on Korean women’s cinema, the SKWC conference aims to celebrate all things women in Korean cinema.
In addition to talks and discussions (topics ranging from the Kaidu Club to recent independent films such as House of Hummingbird and Lucky Chansil), the conference programme includes film screenings and a workshop event on Teaching Korean Women’s Cinema overseas. We’re also super excited to have announce that filmmakers Kangyu Garam 강유가람, Lee Kyung-mi 이경미 and Yim Soon-rye 임순례 will be attending the conference.
Please register your interests via Eventbrite (link below), and we’ll send the full programme and links to the event and its website.
