Debut Double Bill

Brick Lane Bookshop is thrilled to welcome Heuijung Hur and Rowe Irvin to the store for a special double bill event. Hur will read from their debut collection of genre-defying short stories, Failed Summer Vacation; dreamy, dark, and surreal tales that bend reality and linger in the mind. Irvin presents Life Cycle of a Moth, a haunting and urgent exploration of maternal love and sacrifice. Two bold new voices, one unforgettable evening.

Failed Summer Vacation by Heuijung Hur

Seven diversely wild and gripping stories that expose the oddness of how we live and how we might come to live. Moving between science fiction, surrealism, speculative fiction and uncanny realism, these are rich and exhilarating stories that will haunt your summer.

Hueijung Hur was the winner of the Korean Literature and Society’s New Writer Award. Her work has appeared in The White Review.

Life Cycle of a Moth by Rowe Irvin

Maya and her daughter live in isolation, hidden deep in the woods—until a red-haired stranger appears, threatening the world Maya built to keep them safe. Where there were two, there are now three—and nothing can stay the same.

Rowe Irvin is a writer and artist. Her work has appeared in Prototype 5, Unquiet Slumbers: A Collection of Folk Horror Tales (Nepenthe Press) and The Stinging Fly. She was awarded second prize in the 2024 Sean O Faolain International Short Story Competition, and has been shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize and the Bath Short Story Award.
