This lecture will explore the historical and cultural background of late 19th-century Korea, as reflected in the award-winning film Chi-hwa-seon (Painted Fire), directed by Im Kwon-taek. The film portrays the life of the legendary painter Jang Seung-eop (Owon), whose artistic genius flourished amid a turbulent era of political and social change.
If possible, we recommend watching the film in advance to fully appreciate the historical and artistic context discussed in the lecture.
