Taste of Korea promotion runs in over 60 Tesco stores

Experiment with Korean ingredients at Tesco for the next week or so.

Taste of Korea is an annual event for promoting great Korean foods to UK and European markets, which is supported by the South Korean Embassy in the UK and by Korean food distributors and vendors such as Hankook Foods and CJ.

The event is focused on providing the most popular Korean foods to an increasing number of Tesco stores. The first year of the promotion, in 2011, focused on Southern England. This year, the promotion is much more geographically diverse, featuring stores from Hackney to Hull, from Edinburgh to Ashford. A complete list of participating stores is at the bottom of this post. The promotion runs until 2 December.

The ribbon cutting ceremony
The ribbon cutting ceremony: L to R – Bruce Burrowes (President, Kingston Chamber of Commerce); Ken Smith (Mayor, Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames); Malcolm Barker (British Korean Veterans Association); Seol Do-won (Vice President, Tesco Homeplus); HE Lim Sung-nam (ROK Ambassador); Will Blomefield (Tesco head of international affairs); Park Yung-ha (KOTRA London); John Cambell-Johns (British Korean Veterans Association); Park Ho-young (Managing Director, CJ Food); Oonagh Moulton (Merton Council); Agatha Akyigyina (Mayor of Merton); Caroline Cook (Merton Chamber of Commerce); and a man dressed as a vegetable.

The promotion was launched at the New Malden Tesco Extra on 18 November, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by the South Korean Ambassador, British War veterans, and representatives of the business community. A chef was on hand with free bulgogi to show what could be done. I have not managed to establish what the man dressed as a vegetable was doing there.

Thanks to KOTRA for permission to use their photographs of the opening ceremony.

  1. Went to the one in Hull and not only did they not have much in the way of products, none of the staff knew anything about it!

    1. That doesn’t surprise me at all. When I asked the Tesco press office about this promotion two years ago they had absolutely no idea it was happening. I didn’t bother trying this time round. The list of participating stores was provided by KOTRA.
