I had never distrusted Big Data. I accepted all its decisions and walked the path it laid out for me. Even the date of my birth had been set to the most optimal day through machine learning. My entire life, I lived without doubt. But as time went on, I lost vigor. Life slowly drained from my body.
Was I the problem? Rophe and I both followed AI’s guidelines, but why was it that she derived such pleasure from work while I began to die inside?
In a world dominated by Big Data, artificial intelligence makes all of a human’s important life decisions and provides daily prophecies first thing in the morning. While most follow the almighty AI blindly, a man prides himself on forging his own path. Once he realizes that AI only recommends jobs based on aptitude, not passion, he quits his soul-sucking corporate job and opens an independent detective’s office where he dreams of helping people.
One day, a woman walks into his virtual office searching for her brother who was alerted by AI that he would die within the day. Unwilling to sit by as death crept up on him, he ripped the electronic tracker out of his body and disappeared.
As he helps his client find her brother, the man discovers that this is not an isolated incident. Soon, he is embroiled in a life-or-death case that pits him against the system and tests everything he thinks he knows about Big Data, life, and even himself.
